This Week with Kathlen Enright

Hello from Atlanta, Georgia!

Oftentimes grantmakers talk about being inspired by the amazing work that the nonprofits in their communities are able to do. They tell of small but mighty groups who have impact beyond their size and who put the needs of those they serve at the center of their work. I was proud to find such teams here at the Council when I arrived, one of which is our Legal Affairs team.

When we surveyed members as part of the process to reimagine Council membership, we found that 35 percent of respondents rank legal services & resources as the most valuable Council benefit. Last year, our legal team answered more than 2,000 requests for information from Council members. The team also helps draft legislation supportive of our policy objectives and they review and comment on regulations from Treasury and other executive branch agencies. Additionally, our legal team produces Mastering Foundation Law: The Council on Foundations Compendium of Legal Resources, a one-of-a-kind resource that serves as a comprehensive guide to foundation law for the non-lawyer.

Last week, I shared that our smaller foundation members hope we will do more to reach them with lower cost events and services that meet their needs as we reimagine the Council. This is why I am excited to announce that as of today, all members will receive access to every chapter of the Compendium for FREE.

We’re also focusing the Member Benefits Spotlight this week on our Legal Services to make sure you know everything our Legal Team has to offer.

Until next week,

P.S. – Yesterday, I met with a great group of grantmakers at an event hosted by our friends at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga and Thursday I will connect with grantmakers here in Atlanta through our friends at Southeastern Council of Foundations. I can’t wait to share more about those conversations next week!

Member Benefits Spotlight

Legal Services

Our top-notch team of attorneys is always available by phone and email to answer your legal questions, help with legal research, and even review documents. In addition to answering more than 2,000 member inquiries a year they also host webinars and conduct a popular series of in-person legal sessions. There are two left for this year: Legal Matters for Community Foundations in Oklahoma City, OK and Legal Matters for Corporate Foundations in Chicago, IL.

We’re excited to add free access to the Compendium of Legal Resources to the suite of legal services we provide to members. There are currently 11 chapters available and two more to be released this year –covering UBIT and charitable solicitation regulations. As a member, you also have access to the more than 150 members-only legal compliance resources on cof.org, including sample documents and FAQS.

If you ever have any questions for our Legal Team, just reach out to legal@cof.org.

Please note that all correspondence and consultations provided by Council attorneys and legal staff are intended for informational purposes only and not as part of an attorney-client relationship. Council attorneys are not licensed in every state and cannot provide legal representation.

Reimagining the Council

Last week was great in North Carolina and Nashville listening to ways  our members, nonmembers and partners think the Council can help advance the field of philanthropy. I hope to connect with you at one of this summer’s remaining opportunities to reimagine our vision and value to the field. If you can’t attend one of our planned in-person or virtual events, please schedule a 15-minute call with me, or just reply to this email with any thoughts or feedback you may have.
