Community Philanthropy Update

Greetings Friend,

Happy New Year from the Community Foundations National Standards Board (CFNSB)! I am Dr. Michelle Foster, President & CEO of The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and CFNSB President.

As we begin a new year filled with opportunity, I am inspired by the strength and dedication of our community foundations. National Standards is a powerful reflection of our sector’s commitment to excellence, equity, and self-regulation. More than 450 accredited organizations are leading the way with integrity and purpose. I’m looking forward to supporting the continued growth of the program and celebrating the collective impact we’re making, especially as we navigate a time of change and heightened attention to civic and philanthropic leadership.

One of the key milestones I’m looking forward to in the year ahead is the launch of the 2026 review committee. This group will thoughtfully examine all 26 standards to ensure they remain relevant, responsive, and aligned with the evolving needs of our field and the communities we serve. I’m excited to see how this process will elevate our shared commitment to continuous improvement and meaningful impact.

In addition, the CFNSB is proud to announce the appointment of three distinguished individuals to our board of directors — Monica Moser from the Jackson Community Foundation, Missy Batman from the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation, and Elizabeth Schultheiss from the Battle Creek Community Foundation. We are confident their guidance will strengthen our mission and support the achievement of our strategic goals.

CFNSB recognizes its outgoing board members, Susie Nelson from the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley, and Jennifer Doyle from The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Their legacy and contributions have played a vital role in shaping the success of National Standards. CFNSB extends our sincere thanks for your dedicated service.

If you haven’t yet, please consider joining our community. You can now also follow us on LinkedIn. To learn more about the accreditation process, reach out to submissions@cfstandards.org or register for one of our webinars on the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. ET.

Best,

Michelle Foster

CF Insights Highlight

NEW: Consulting Support to Implement Activity-Based Costing Findings

The Activity-Based Costing toolkit was created to help community foundations assess the true costs of their products and services to donors. If you’ve recently completed the Activity-Based Costing process, you can now receive follow-on support to help you apply its findings by co-creating a roadmap to update your business model.

This service, provided through a pilot partnership between the Council and the Community Foundation Impact Initiative, will help you make strategic decisions, implement business model changes that align with that strategy, streamline processes, explore new revenue opportunities, and provide board and staff training.

Visit our website to learn more, complete our query form to set up an initial consultation, or simply email us at cfinsights@cof.org anytime with your questions.

Accounting Guidance for Endowment Funds

Our new web resources provide accounting guidance to organizations that place endowment funds with community foundations. Updated late last year by the FAOG Accounting Practices Committee, the guidance is presented across two companion guides: one for community foundations and one for nonprofit organizations.
