Thank you to the more than 850 philanthropic leaders who joined us in Denver for Leading Locally last month, as we connected around the power of place-based philanthropy. I wanted to share an update on an announcement we made in Denver, in case you missed it:
During the opening plenary, we announced that CF Insights is coming home to the Council on September 1, 2023.
Both Candid and the Council hope this transition will help more community foundations access and add to the sector’s leading benchmarking dataset, providing more comprehensive information about sector trends and better insights to inform your organizational practice. With this transition, David Rosado also joined the Council on June 1st as our new Senior Advisor, Community Philanthropy.
We joined with Candid earlier this week to present the findings from the most recent CF Insights survey. If you missed that conversation, watch the recording.

Answer: Churches benefit from unique treatment under the Tax Code in that they don’t need to apply exemption under section 501(c)(3) in order to qualify as a public charity. Any organization that meets the rather broad definition of a church is automatically considered to be a public charity under IRC section 170(b)(1)(A)(i), although many churches also elect to file for 501(c)(3) status. That means as long as you can determine that the organization is in fact functioning as a church, you can establish a designated fund for it the same way you would any other public charity.
